Why pool halls destroy traditional insulation

Swimming pool halls are among the most demanding environments for any insulation system. Nexseal LE is a closed-cell spray foam — performance declared to I.S. EN 14315-1 — with an integral vapour barrier that handles these extreme conditions. With a lambda value of 0.027 W/m·K, it bonds directly to steel, timber glulam beams, concrete soffits and masonry walls — creating a seamless thermal and moisture barrier that traditional materials simply cannot match.

Why pool environments destroy traditional insulation: PIR boards, rockwool batts, polystyrene sheets and rigid boards were never designed for sustained high humidity. In a pool hall they face constant exposure to warm, moisture-laden air that penetrates joints, fixings and any gap in the vapour barrier.

Why do swimming pool ceilings get condensation?
Swimming pool halls maintain water temperatures of 28–32°C, generating constant evaporation. This warm, moisture-laden air rises to the ceiling where it meets cooler roof surfaces and condenses. Pool halls typically run at 50–70% relative humidity, with levels at ceiling height reaching 90% or more. Without proper insulation and vapour control, condensation drips back into the pool, damages the roof structure and promotes corrosion of steel beams and fixings.
How does spray foam control condensation in pool buildings?
Closed-cell spray foam raises the internal surface temperature of the roof and walls above the dew point, preventing moisture from condensing on structural surfaces. Nexseal LE is both an insulator and a vapour barrier in one — it bonds directly to the substrate, fills around beams, purlins and services, and creates a continuous sealed envelope that prevents warm humid air from reaching cold structural elements.
What thickness of spray foam for a swimming pool roof?
Most pool hall roofs require 35–75mm of Nexseal LE depending on the roof construction, local climate and Building Regulations requirements. Steel-framed pool halls with metal deck roofing typically need 50–75mm for effective condensation control. Timber glulam structures may require 35–50mm between beams. We specify the exact thickness during the survey based on thermal calculations and the building’s specific conditions.
Can spray foam be applied to pool basins?
Yes. Nexseal LE can be applied to the external walls and underside of pool basins and shells — both kit-build fibreglass shells and cast concrete basins. This reduces heat loss through the pool structure, protects against ground moisture ingress and helps maintain water temperature more efficiently. The pool must be drained or the basin must be accessible from the outside during installation.
Is spray foam safe near chlorinated pool water?
Yes. Cured closed-cell spray foam is chemically inert and unaffected by chlorine vapour, bromine or other pool treatment chemicals. Nexseal LE does not off-gas once cured and does not react with pool chemicals. During installation, the pool is typically covered or drained as a precaution, and the building is ventilated until the foam has fully cured.
Why is open-cell foam unsuitable for pool environments?
Open-cell spray foam absorbs moisture — its open cellular structure acts like a sponge in high-humidity environments. In a swimming pool hall running at 50–70% relative humidity (often higher at ceiling level), open-cell foam would absorb moisture continuously, losing its thermal performance, adding weight to the roof structure, and eventually failing. It also does not provide a vapour barrier. Only closed-cell foam like Nexseal LE should be used in pool environments.
Can existing pool ceiling insulation be replaced?
Yes. We regularly strip out failed traditional insulation from pool halls — sagging rockwool, delaminated PIR boards, water-damaged rigid insulation — and replace it with spray foam. The existing insulation and any damaged fixings are removed, the substrate is inspected and cleaned, then Nexseal LE is sprayed directly to the roof structure. The result is dramatically better condensation control and thermal performance.
How long does swimming pool insulation take?
A typical hotel or residential pool hall can be sprayed in 2–3 days. Larger leisure centre pools may take 3–5 days depending on roof area, access requirements and whether scaffolding is needed. Pool basin insulation is usually completed in 1–2 days. The foam cures in minutes, so there is no drying time — the pool can be refilled and operational shortly after completion.
How much does swimming pool insulation cost?
Cost depends on the pool hall size, roof structure, substrate type and required thickness.
