Two Systems, One Goal

The right insulation for every stud wall

Open Cell

Sucraseal

Breathable, vapour-open spray foam — the ideal solution for timber frame stud walls where moisture management through the wall structure is essential. Excellent acoustic absorption makes it the first choice for residential applications.

  • Breathable and vapour-open — ideal for timber frame
  • Excellent acoustic absorption between rooms
  • Cost-effective thermal performance
  • Expands to fill every gap and void in the cavity
  • Can be sprayed or injected (ProFill system)
  • Declared performance to BS EN 14315-1
Closed Cell

Nexseal LE

Higher thermal performance per millimetre with an integral vapour barrier — the right choice for hybrid walls, solid wall retrofits and thin wall build-ups where space is limited and moisture control is critical.

  • Integral vapour barrier — no separate VCL required
  • Higher thermal performance per mm of thickness
  • Bonds to masonry, stone, timber sheathing
  • Space-saving for thin wall build-ups
  • Resistant to moisture ingress
  • Declared performance to BS EN 14315-1
Two Application Methods

Free-spray on site or ProFill injection for closed panels

Spray foam insulation being applied between timber frame studs

Free-Spray — open stud cavities on site

Both Sucraseal and Nexseal LE can be free-sprayed between open studs directly on site. The installer sprays into the open cavity where the foam expands and conforms around wires, pipes and irregular framing. Once cured, the excess is trimmed flush and the wall is ready for lining.

No gaps, voids or cold bridges around framing
Fast installation — foam cures in minutes

ProFill — injection for closed panels

The ProFill system uses Sucraseal open cell foam injected through a pre-lined VCL membrane into closed timber frame panels. The foam fills the cavity completely with zero trimming required — ideal for factory-built panels and modular construction.

Why Spray Foam for Stud Walls

The performance gap between design and as-built, closed

Traditional batt insulation leaves gaps around framing, services and junctions. Spray foam fills the entire cavity, creating a continuous thermal and air barrier.

Eliminates Air Gaps

Fills the entire stud cavity, eliminating the convection loops and air gaps that reduce batt insulation performance. True as-designed thermal performance.

Fills Around Services

Wires, pipes, junction boxes and irregular framing are seamlessly encased by the expanding foam. No cutting, notching or fitting around obstacles.

Superior Acoustics

Sucraseal’s open cellular structure absorbs airborne noise — ideal for party walls, partitions and loft conversions.

Mixed Substrates

Bonds to timber, masonry, stone, OSB, plywood and metal — one substrate or a combination, the foam adheres on contact.

Fire classification & protection: both Sucraseal and Nexseal LE achieve Euroclass E under EN 13501-1 and must be protected with plasterboard or a suitable lining in stud wall applications. For exposed applications, DC315 intumescent coating upgrades the foam surface to Euroclass B-s2-d0 — limited contribution to fire spread. Duratite provides full fire protection guidance for every project, including appropriate lining specifications and compliance with TGD B (Technical Booklet E in Northern Ireland).

Commercial Stud Wall Applications

Used across residential, commercial and industrial builds

Commercial Office Fit-Outs

High-performance thermal and acoustic insulation within stud partitions — superior acoustic separation between offices, meeting rooms and open plan areas.

Timber Frame New Builds

A widely used construction method. Foam between studs provides a seamless airtight layer that rigid batts cannot match — no gaps, settling or compression.

Steel Frame Buildings

Stud wall infill that bonds to both steel and plasterboard, bridging the junction and eliminating cold bridges that plague traditional methods.

Solid Wall Retrofits

Internal wall insulation using foam between new stud frames fixed to existing masonry — TGD L thermal upgrade without altering the external appearance.

Acoustic Partitions

Open-cell Sucraseal traps sound energy within stud cavities, outperforming mineral wool batts which settle over time.

Stud Wall Insulation FAQs

Common questions answered

What is spray foam stud wall insulation?
Spray foam stud wall insulation is a method of insulating timber frame and stud walls by spraying or injecting polyurethane foam directly into the wall cavity between studs. The foam expands to fill the entire cavity, conforming around wires, pipes and irregular framing to create a continuous thermal and air barrier with no gaps or voids.
What is the difference between open cell and closed cell spray foam for stud walls?
Sucraseal open cell (0.039 W/m·K) is breathable and vapour-open, ideal for timber frame walls where moisture management through the wall structure is important. It provides excellent acoustic absorption and is cost-effective. Nexseal LE closed cell (0.027 W/m·K) provides an integral vapour barrier and higher thermal performance per millimetre, ideal for hybrid walls, solid wall retrofits and thin wall build-ups.
Is spray foam suitable for timber frame new builds?
Yes. Sucraseal open cell is the preferred choice for timber frame new builds. It is breathable and vapour-open, allowing moisture to move through the wall structure as designed. It fills every void, provides excellent acoustic performance between rooms, and can be free-sprayed or injected via the ProFill system.
What is the ProFill injection system?
ProFill is a Sucraseal injection method designed for closed timber frame panels. The stud cavity is pre-lined with a VCL membrane, and Sucraseal is injected through the membrane to fill the cavity completely. Zero trimming is needed, making it ideal for factory-built closed panels and modular off-site construction.
Can spray foam be used for solid wall retrofits?
Yes. Nexseal LE closed cell spray foam is ideal for internal wall insulation on solid walls. It bonds directly to brick, stone and masonry without fixings, provides an integral vapour barrier to prevent interstitial condensation, and its high thermal performance (0.027 W/m·K) makes it suitable for thin wall build-ups where space is limited.
What stud depths can spray foam be applied to?
Spray foam can be applied to stud cavities from 89mm to 140mm or deeper. Common stud depths are 89mm, 100mm, 120mm and 140mm. The foam is sprayed to the required thickness within the cavity, allowing for service zones where needed. We provide U-value calculations for every project.
Does spray foam insulation improve acoustic performance?
Yes. Sucraseal open cell provides excellent acoustic absorption due to its open cellular structure. It significantly reduces airborne sound transmission through stud walls, making it ideal for party walls, internal partitions and loft conversions where sound insulation between rooms is important.
What fire rating does spray foam have in stud walls?
Both foams achieve Euroclass E under EN 13501-1. In stud wall applications, the foam must always be protected with plasterboard or a suitable fire-resistant lining. For exposed applications, DC315 intumescent coating upgrades the surface to Euroclass B-s2-d0. Duratite provides full fire protection guidance.
How long does stud wall insulation installation take?
Spray foam cures in minutes, so there is no drying time and follow-on trades can proceed quickly. A typical residential stud wall project is completed within 1–3 days depending on the area and number of walls. Duratite coordinates with other trades to minimise programme impact.
What warranty is provided for stud wall insulation?
Both Sucraseal and Nexseal LE carry manufacturer product warranties. Installations carried out through our approved installer network are covered by a 10-year workmanship guarantee on stud wall insulation projects. Full warranty documentation is included in your completion pack alongside manufacturer datasheets and U-value calculations for building control sign-off.
Is spray foam better than mineral wool for commercial stud walls?
For most commercial applications, yes. Spray foam fills every void with zero gaps, provides superior airtightness, does not settle, and delivers thermal and acoustic performance in one application.
Do you provide stud wall insulation services nationwide?
Yes. Duratite provides commercial stud wall insulation across Ireland and Northern Ireland. Email info@duratite.ie.
