Galway’s commercial base mixes medical-device manufacturing with port, university and service activity. Medtronic’s Parkmore facility is a research and manufacturing site, and in 2022 the company announced 200 new R&D roles there as it marked 40 years in Ireland. On the other side of the city, the Port of Galway sits on the River Corrib in the sheltered eastern corner of Galway Bay. The Corrib, at about 6 km one of Europe’s shortest rivers, carries Lough Corrib’s water straight through the city. Between business parks and older dockside stores, building ages and construction types vary widely. Newer units are built to recent energy standards, so the retrofit opportunity lies mainly in older stores and workshops with single-skin roofs.

For a building, persistence matters more than the total: frequent showers and mild, damp air keep humidity high indoors, particularly in stores that are heated by day and cool overnight.

On a steel-clad unit, Enverge Nexseal LE closed-cell foam applied to the inner face of the roof and wall sheets forms one continuous insulating and air-sealing layer, with a thermal conductivity of 0.022 W/m·K. It also stops the sheet acting as a cold condensation surface. Galway City Council is the building control authority within the city, and Galway County Council covers the surrounding county. The older dockside stores near the Port of Galway and the modern units at Parkmore raise quite different questions. Down by the Corrib, buildings tend to be older, have been altered many times and may mix stone walls with later steel roofs, so the survey spends time working out what each part of the envelope is made of and where damp is really coming from. Rising or penetrating damp in masonry is not solved by spraying insulation onto a roof, and the installer will say so. Out on the business parks, by contrast, the structure is usually straightforward, but the use is demanding: tightly controlled production areas, stores for components and packaging, and plant space that runs day and night. For those sites the decision is less about whether foam will stick and more about how the work fits a quality system. To help the survey along, gather anything that shows how the building behaves over time. Readings from existing temperature or humidity loggers are valuable, as are maintenance records of roof leaks, notes of when condensation appears, and any past reports from roofing contractors. Mark which rooms must stay clean and which can be cleared completely. If the premises are rented, confirm what the lease allows before altering the roof lining. With that in hand, the approved installer can recommend closed-cell or open-cell product zone by zone and set out masking and hand-back steps.
