Local context
Spray foam against condensation in Derry’s port stores and north-west farm sheds
Much of what reaches Derry by sea needs dry storage. Foyle Port’s bulk terminal at Lisahally, just downstream of the city, has 440 metres of quay, takes vessels of up to 62,000 deadweight tonnes and handles about 2 million tonnes of cargo a year, including animal feed, fertiliser and plywood. It supports roughly 1,000 direct and indirect jobs. Feed that takes on moisture spoils and plywood that gets wet can swell and stain, so the sheds holding these goods, at the port and further along the supply chain, need roofs that stay dry on the inside as well as the outside.
In metal-clad buildings, condensation is a common source of internal drip. The Met Office’s Ballykelly station in Co. Londonderry averaged about 861 mm of rain over 1991 to 2020 and records rain on around 176 days a year, which gives a sense of how often damp weather reaches the area. When moist air inside a store meets the underside of single-skin sheeting that has cooled overnight, water forms on the sheets and falls onto whatever lies below. Opening doors for loading lets more humid air in, and the problem can carry on even when the roof itself is perfectly watertight.
Enverge Nexseal LE is a closed-cell spray foam applied directly to the inner face of the sheeting. Once cured it forms a continuous insulating layer bonded to the metal, so the air inside no longer meets a cold surface, and the same application seals laps, eaves and fixings through which heat and damp air move. Nexseal LE carries a 25-year manufacturer-backed product warranty. An approved installer surveys the store first, checking for roof leaks, loose fixings and failed rooflights, because foam should only go onto a dry, sound sheet. Duratite supplies the foam and passes Derry enquiries to that installer.
Beyond the port, the city’s fringe at Eglinton, Claudy and Newbuildings leads into farming country. Co. Londonderry held 208,647 cattle and 364,620 sheep in June 2025, according to DAERA. Housed cattle and sheep give off a great deal of moisture, and in an uninsulated shed that vapour ends up as drip on bedding, feed and animals. Spray foam on the roof reduces the drip, but livestock buildings still need good ventilation, and the installer weighs both before recommending a thickness.
