Quonset Hut vs Nissen Hut: What Is the Difference?

Quonset huts and Nissen huts are both semi-circular corrugated steel buildings, but they have different origins and slightly different designs. If you own one in Ireland or Northern Ireland, understanding the type matters for maintenance, conversion and insulation planning.

Nissen Hut (First World War, 1916)

The Nissen hut was designed for the army in 1916 by engineer Major Peter Nissen, a Canadian-born officer in the Royal Engineers, during the First World War. It is a semi-circular structure made from corrugated iron sheets over a framework of steel ribs. Large numbers were produced during the war, and the design was revived during the Second World War for military barracks, stores and workshops. Many survive today, and they are widely used across Ireland and Northern Ireland as farm and industrial buildings.

Quonset Hut (American — WWII)

The quonset hut was developed in 1941 at Quonset Point Naval Air Station in Rhode Island, USA. Inspired by Peter Nissen’s design, the American version featured a wider profile, interior lining and different end wall construction. Over 150,000 were built during WWII and shipped worldwide, and surviving examples can still be found in many countries.

Romney Hut (Second World War)

The Romney hut is a larger variant developed during the Second World War, with a wider span and greater internal height. Romney huts were commonly used as aircraft hangars, vehicle workshops and large storage buildings. Surviving examples are often found on former airfields and military sites.

Insulating Curved Steel Buildings

All three types share the same insulation challenge: the curved corrugated steel construction makes traditional insulation methods extremely difficult. Rigid boards cannot follow the curve. Spray foam is the only insulation that bonds directly to the curved corrugated profile, providing seamless thermal insulation and condensation control without framework or battening.
