Purios spray foam insulation

Three foams, three jobs. Purios F is the soft, breathable open-cell grade for attics and timber frame. Purios H is rigid closed-cell at λ 0.0224 W/m·K — the target U‑value in a thinner build-up. Purios HR is the dense roofing grade that goes on roofs and takes the weather. Duratite is the distributor in Ireland.

What Purios foam actually does

Sprayed as a liquid, it expands into the shape it is given and cures bonded to the substrate. That single property is where every practical advantage comes from.

Self-bonds — nothing fixes through

The foam grips the substrate as it cures. No fixings, no penetrations, no rails running cold straight through the insulation line. On an asbestos-cement roof that is not a convenience, it is the whole point — a fixing means penetrating the material being contained.

Insulates and air-seals in one pass

It fills the gaps a board cannot be cut to fit — corrugations, rafter junctions, service penetrations, awkward voids. The insulation layer and the air barrier are the same material, applied at the same time.

Follows geometry boards cannot

Curved shells, arched huts, cylindrical tanks, piling voids, container ribs. Anywhere a rigid board would need cutting, packing and taping, the foam simply goes on and takes the shape.

Closed cell adds strength and vapour resistance

The closed-cell grades cure rigid — 200 kPa for Purios H, 300 kPa for HR — and stiffen the element they bond to, while resisting liquid water and vapour. Open-cell stays soft and deliberately vapour-open instead.

The three Purios foams

Picking the wrong one is the most common and most expensive mistake in spray foam. Open cell and closed cell are not interchangeable.

Purios F

Sprayed as a liquid, expands roughly a hundred times to fill every gap and awkward void, then cures soft and light at 9–12 kg/m³. With 90–95% open cells and µ ≥ 5 it stays vapour-open, so moisture diffuses through the build-up rather than being trapped against the structure.

Purios H

The low-λ grade. At 0.0224 W/m·K it reaches a target U‑value in a noticeably thinner build-up, which is what you want when depth is tight. Cures rigid at 35–40 kg/m³ and stiffens the element it bonds to.

Purios HR

The roofing grade, and the densest of the three at a minimum of 50 kg/m³. Built to sit on a roof: 300 kPa compressive, the lowest water absorption in the range, and applied in thin 10–20 mm passes so it follows a corrugated profile cleanly.

What the low λ buys you. At 0.0224 W/m·K, Purios H reaches roughly the same U‑value at 100 mm that open-cell Purios F needs about 160 mm to reach. Where the depth exists, that difference does not matter and open cell is often the better and cheaper answer. Where it does not — a tight wall build-up, a soffit with a headroom limit, a floor zone that is already committed — it is the entire reason to specify closed cell.

Open cell or closed cell — how to decide

This is a moisture decision before it is a thermal one. Thickness can fix a U‑value. Nothing fixes the wrong vapour behaviour in the wrong place.

Reach for open-cell Purios F when…

  • The construction is meant to breathe — a traditional roof slope, a timber frame with a vapour-open build-up.
  • You have the depth to spend — between rafters or studs, where 150–200 mm is available anyway.
  • Weight matters — at 9–12 kg/m³ it adds almost nothing to an old roof structure.
  • You want acoustic damping between rooms and floors as well as insulation.
  • The job is internal — attics, partitions, ceilings, stud walls.

Reach for closed-cell H or HR when…

  • Depth is limited and the U‑value still has to be hit — H reaches at 100 mm what F needs 160 mm for.
  • The foam has to resist water — roofs, terraces, below ground and piling infill, where absorption is 0.29 kg/m² or better.
  • The element needs rigidity, or the foam itself is taking load at 200–300 kPa.
  • The build-up wants a vapour-resistant layer at µ ≥ 46, positioned deliberately within the detail.
  • It is a roof — then it is HR specifically, not H, and it needs 15 °C and RH under 60% to go on.

Stop and ask first if…

  • You are putting a vapour-resistant foam on the cold side. Assess condensation risk to BS 5250 — an AVCL may still be needed.
  • The foam will be left exposed in an occupied space. A DC315 barrier is normally required, driven by the fire strategy.
  • You are considering Purios F below ground or under load. It is intended for neither — that is what H is for.
  • The building is domestic and mortgaged. Lenders ask specific questions about foam in roofs.
  • The roof is asbestos cement. It changes the method, not just the material — talk to us before specifying.

Where Purios goes

The jobs it gets specified for, and the grade that does each one. Anything with a curve, a corrugation or an awkward junction is where sprayed foam stops competing with boards and starts beating them.

Attics & rafters

Sprayed to the underside of the roof for a warm, sealed attic, following every rafter and closing the air leaks a roll of mineral wool cannot reach. A typical attic goes in around a day.

The U‑value shown is indicative only — the foam layer at its published λ plus standard surface resistances (Rsi 0.10, Rse 0.04); the real figure comes from a calculation on the actual build-up. Certification — and what we do not claim

Spray foam attracts more certification confusion than any other product we sell, so here is the position in plain terms.

What Purios actually holds

  • CE marking under the Construction Products Regulation, with published Declarations of Performance — 15-CPR305-2018 for Purios F, 36-CPR305-2024 for Purios H.
  • EN 14315-1 — the harmonised standard for sprayed rigid polyurethane foam. Purios F is declared as semi-rigid open-cell to it; Purios HR is declared to the 2013 edition.
  • EN 13501-1 reaction to fire — Euroclass F and B-s1,d0 to EN 13823 for Purios F; Euroclass E for Purios H.
  • PZH sanitary certificate for Purios F, covering residential use.
  • A full technical data sheet with every order, which is where design values should be taken from.

What we will not tell you it has

  • No third-party certificate claimed. Purios performance is manufacturer-declared and CE marked — on any building type.
  • Euroclass E and F are not fire ratings to boast about. They are what unprotected PU foam classifies as. Where exposed foam needs a barrier, that comes from DC315 over the cured foam, driven by the building’s fire strategy.
  • If a supplier quotes a certificate for their spray foam, ask for the number and read what it actually covers — which brand, which company, and whether the scope is domestic or commercial. The answer is often not what the sales sheet implied.

How a Purios job actually runs

Six stages. The records taken at stage five are what the warranty rests on — not the invoice.

Survey

Substrate, moisture, existing build-up, access and the target U‑value. This is what decides grade and thickness — everything after it is execution.

2

Specify

Grade, thickness, take-off and, where it applies, the fire and moisture strategy. Written down, with the arithmetic shown.

3

Prepare

Clean, dry, sound substrate. Biocidal clean where there is growth. Rooflights, services and plant masked off before anything is sprayed.

4

Spray

Built up in controlled passes to the specified depth — 10–20 mm for HR, 10–25 mm for H, 60–100 mm for F. On a profile you work to the crown, not the trough.

5

Record

Depth gauged and logged, substrate and ambient temperature and RH logged, batch numbers captured, photo record taken. No records, no warranty.

Protect

DC315 thermal barrier where the fire strategy requires it, or a UV-stable coating where the foam is left exposed to weather.

Conditions are not a formality. Purios HR needs a substrate and ambient temperature of at least 15 °C and relative humidity no higher than 60%, on a substrate that is genuinely clean and dry rather than dry to the touch. That is why the biocidal clean and the spray are separated in the programme, and why roof work of this kind is placed in settled weather rather than fitted around it.

The warranty, and what it depends on

Purios is sold to contractors. You buy the material from us and apply it yourself, so there is one warranty on the table — and it is worth knowing exactly what makes it stand up.

What it depends on

A warranty is only ever as good as the record behind it. Four things decide whether a claim stands up, and all four are captured on site while the job runs:

  1. Thickness — gauged and logged as you build up, not estimated afterwards.
  2. Conditions — substrate and ambient temperature and RH at the time of spraying.
  3. Batch numbers — A and B components, tied to the delivery.
  4. Photographs — prep, application, and the finished surface.

Foam applied outside its stated conditions is the single most common reason a claim fails. If you want the record sheets we use, ask and we will send them.

What is the difference between Purios F, H and HR?
Three different jobs. Purios F is soft, light open-cell foam that stays vapour-open — attics, rafters, internal walls and timber frame. Purios H is rigid closed-cell at a very low thermal conductivity of 0.0224 W/m·K — walls, floors, foundations and terraces where you want the target U‑value in a thinner build-up. Purios HR is the closed-cell roofing grade, denser again at minimum 50 kg/m³ and 300 kPa, used on roofs where the foam has to take the weather.
Who makes Purios?
Purinova Sp. z o.o. of Bydgoszcz, Poland. Purios is their spray foam brand. Duratite supplies it to trade on account across Ireland and Northern Ireland.
Should I use open-cell or closed-cell foam?
It is decided by the moisture strategy, not by the U‑value. Open-cell Purios F is vapour-open, so moisture can diffuse through the build-up instead of being trapped against the structure — that suits breathable roof and timber-frame construction. Closed-cell Purios H and HR are vapour-resistant, so they have to be positioned deliberately within the detail. Get that decision wrong and no amount of thickness fixes it.
What thickness of Purios do I need?
It comes from the U‑value the project has to hit, which comes out of the Part L calculation for that building. As a guide, Purios H at 100 mm gets you near 0.22 W/m²K where open-cell Purios F would need around 160 mm for the same figure. Send us the target and the build-up and we will confirm the grade and the thickness, free.
How is Purios performance evidenced?
Purios carries CE marking under the Construction Products Regulation with published Declarations of Performance, reaction-to-fire classification to EN 13501-1, and is manufactured and declared to EN 14315-1. No third-party certificate is claimed.
What blowing agent does Purios use?
Per the manufacturer’s data sheet, Purios H is blown with a new-generation foaming agent carrying zero ozone-depletion potential and a low global warming potential.
Does exposed Purios foam need a fire barrier?
Where closed-cell foam is left exposed and a thermal or ignition barrier is required, it is over-coated with DC315 intumescent coating. The requirement comes from the building’s fire strategy, not from the foam — check it before you specify.
What conditions does Purios HR need on site?
A substrate and ambient temperature of at least 15 °C, relative humidity no higher than 60%, and a substrate that is genuinely clean and dry rather than dry to the touch. That is why roof work of this kind is programmed into settled weather rather than fitted around it.
Does Purios need mechanical fixings?
No. It is spray-applied and self-bonds to the substrate as it cures. That matters most on asbestos-cement roofs, where a fixing would mean penetrating the very material being contained.
Is Purios F suitable below ground or under load?
No. Purios F is a lightweight breathable insulation at ≥ 10 kPa compressive strength — it is not intended for below-ground use or anywhere load-bearing strength and moisture resistance are required. Purios H is the grade for those.
How much does one set cover?
A Purios H set yields around 10,000 m² × mm of applied foam — 100 m² at 100 mm, or 200 m² at 50 mm. A Purios HR set yields around 7,500 m² × mm — 300 m² at 25 mm. Allow about 10% on top for site loss. Purios F is supplied by take-off rather than by set.
What warranty comes with Purios?
A material warranty issued by Duratite, covering the foam against the manufacturer’s declared performance. Purios is sold to contractors, so the warranty travels with the material to whoever applies it. It depends on the site record — thickness readings, substrate and ambient conditions, batch numbers and photographs — so keep those as the job runs.
Can I buy Purios in Ireland?
