Why Pig Units Need Proper Insulation

Poorly insulated pig sheds create a cascade of problems — from condensation dripping onto livestock, to excessive ammonia build-up, to rising heating bills and compromised BRC food safety compliance.

Temperature Control

Piglets need 30°C in farrowing crates. Sows perform best at 18–20°C. Proper insulation maintains these zones without excessive heating spend.

Condensation Elimination

Closed-cell spray foam raises metal roof surface temperatures above dew point — permanently eliminating the dripping that causes respiratory disease and soiled bedding.

Food Safety Compliance

BRC, Red Tractor and RSPCA Assured schemes all require appropriate environmental controls. Our independently tested system satisfies auditor requirements.

Nexseal LE Closed-Cell: The Right Choice for Pig Units

Open-cell spray foam absorbs moisture and ammonia — the last thing you want in a pig shed environment. Nexseal LE closed-cell spray foam is the only sensible choice:

  • Seamless vapour barrier — prevents moisture ingress through cladding joints
  • Impervious to ammonia — won't degrade in the high-nitrogen atmosphere
  • Rigid, racking-resistant — won't sag or fall onto livestock
  • Bonds to corrugated steel, sheeting, blockwork and timber
  • 25–100mm installation thickness — thermal performance to spec
  • Independently tested — declared performance to BS EN 14315-1 for planning and building control

λ = 0.027 W/m·K — the highest-performing spray foam insulation available in the UK.

Pig Shed Insulation — Common Questions

Yes — once cured (typically 24 hours), closed-cell spray foam is inert and non-toxic. Nexseal LE has been used in thousands of livestock buildings across Ireland and Northern Ireland. Animals can return to treated areas the following day.

Closed-cell spray foam has excellent chemical resistance to ammonia and other livestock gases. Open-cell foam is not suitable for pig units as it can absorb moisture and odours.

Closed-cell spray foam for pig sheds typically costs £10–£18/m² installed, depending on thickness and access. Full-building treatment of a 40m × 20m unit would be £8,000–£14,400 typically. We provide fixed-price surveys.

In most cases, no — internal insulation of an existing agricultural building does not require planning permission. Some areas (AONB, listed buildings) may have restrictions. We can advise at survey.

Yes — we plan installation in sections to avoid disrupting farrowing, weaning or finishing phases. We work closely with farm managers to schedule around the production calendar.
