Closed Cell vs Open Cell

Which foam does your building actually need?

Closed-cell spray foam (Nexseal LE, λ = 0.027 W/m·K) is denser, provides higher thermal resistance per mm, acts as its own vapour barrier, and adds structural rigidity.

Open-cell spray foam (Sucraseal, λ = 0.039 W/m·K) is lighter, more cost-effective, offers superior acoustic absorption, and is breathable — ideal for timber-framed applications where moisture movement needs to be managed.

Every project gets WUFI Pro condensation modelling before we specify — the build-up decides the foam, not the brochure.

Metal-clad or condensating building?Closed cell — Nexseal LE raises surface temperatures above dew point and blocks vapour.

Timber frame or acoustic priority?Open cell — Sucraseal breathes and absorbs sound, paired with a vapour control layer.

Existing cavity or closed void?ProFill slow-rise injection — fills without demolition or expansion damage.

Common Questions

Spray foam insulation FAQs

What is spray foam insulation?
Spray foam insulation is a two-component liquid system that expands on contact to create a seamless, fully bonded thermal layer. It adheres directly to substrates including metal, timber, concrete and masonry without mechanical fixings. Closed-cell foam (Nexseal LE) provides thermal insulation plus vapour control, while open-cell foam (Sucraseal) offers breathable insulation with excellent acoustic properties.
What does Duratite specialise in?
Commercial spray foam insulation across Ireland and Northern Ireland. Warehouses, industrial units, hangars, soffits, swimming pools, marine, agricultural and large-scale retrofit. We are not a residential loft installer.
What is the difference between open-cell and closed-cell spray foam?
Closed-cell spray foam (Nexseal LE, λ = 0.027 W/m·K) is denser, provides higher thermal resistance per mm, acts as its own vapour barrier, and adds structural rigidity. Open-cell spray foam (Sucraseal, λ = 0.039 W/m·K) is lighter, more cost-effective, offers superior acoustic absorption, and is breathable — ideal for timber-framed applications where moisture movement needs to be managed.
How is spray foam performance certified?
Our commercial spray foam performance is declared to I.S. EN 14315-1. For the commercial and industrial work this page covers, the evidence is the manufacturer’s declared values tested to BS EN 14315-1, BS EN 12086 and BS EN 1602, BS 476 Part 7 Class 1 fire performance when coated with DC315, and a manufacturer-backed product warranty. Tell us at enquiry what your specification demands and we will send the exact certificate or test report that answers it. Every installation is carried out by Duratite-trained installers with full documentation including thickness verification, site photographs and warranty paperwork.
What product do you use?
Our primary closed-cell product is Nexseal LE — thermal conductivity 0.027 W/m·K. For specific applications we also use Sucraseal (open-cell), ProFill injection foam, ToughFoam high-density foam, and DC315 intumescent coating where fire-rating is required.
Does spray foam insulation prevent condensation?
Yes. Closed-cell spray foam raises internal surface temperatures above dew point, eliminating the cold face where condensation forms. It also acts as a vapour barrier, preventing moisture migration through the building envelope. This makes it the ideal solution for metal-clad buildings, shipping containers, and swimming pool enclosures where condensation is a chronic problem.
Is spray foam suitable for warehouses and industrial buildings?
Yes — closed-cell foam is ideal for steel-frame industrial buildings. It bonds direct to the underside of profiled metal decks, eliminates cold bridging, stops interstitial condensation, and adds significant racking-bracing rigidity.
How does it compare with mineral wool or rigid board?
Spray foam delivers a continuous air-tight seal in one pass — no gaps, no joints, no cold bridges. Rigid board needs perfect fit and taped joints; mineral wool slumps and absorbs moisture. For irregular profiles, spray foam is the only system that bonds directly without timber battens.
Is spray foam fire-rated?
Spray foam achieves BS 476 Part 7 Class 1 surface spread of flame when overcoated with an intumescent thermal barrier (DC315) where the regulations require it. We always specify the appropriate fire treatment as part of the design package, in line with TGD B.
How much does spray foam insulation cost in Ireland?
Costs vary by application and thickness. Closed-cell Nexseal LE is priced by depth and access. Open-cell Sucraseal is the more cost-effective option. Indicatively, commercial warehouse roof applications are priced per m² after a free survey. A typical agricultural building or warehouse can be insulated in 1–3 days. Contact Duratite for a free, no-obligation quote tailored to your project.
What warranty is provided?
Nexseal LE is supplied with up to a 25-year manufacturer-backed product warranty. Workmanship is covered separately by the approved installer. We provide a single combined certificate at handover.
Do you cover the whole of Ireland?
Yes — Duratite operates an Ireland-wide network of approved commercial installers covering the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. Across Ireland and Northern Ireland, we handle everything from small conversions to large-scale commercial and agricultural installations. You deal with one company; we deploy the right approved team to your site.
How quickly can you survey?
Survey requests are responded to within one working day. Most surveys are carried out within 5–10 working days. Once approved, install lead times typically run 2–6 weeks.
Will install disrupt our operations?
In most cases, no. Installers work nights, weekends and around shutdowns. Spray foam cures within hours, has low odour after 24 hours, and zones can be returned to service the next working day. Full RAMS, with work carried out to the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work (Construction) Regulations 2013.
Do you provide certificates for Building Control / BER / BREEAM?
Yes. Every project includes the manufacturer’s declared performance data for the foam, U-value calculations, condensation risk analysis, photographs, batch IDs, and a signed installation certificate. These satisfy Building Control sign-off, BER requirements, and contribute to BREEAM Mat / Ene credits.
How do I get a quote?
Use the survey form below or email info@duratite.ie. We will respond within one working day, arrange a free site survey, and produce a fully specified quotation with thermal modelling, fire compliance, programme and warranty.
