The short answer
- Farm sheds drip because moist air from animals, bedding, feed and crops meets the cold underside of a single-skin roof sheet. Ventilation is essential, but it cannot warm the sheet.
- Closed-cell spray foam bonds to the underside of the existing sheets, keeps the inner surface warm and seals it from moist air. Insulated panels usually mean replacing the roof. The right choice depends on the building, the sheets and what it is used for.
- TAMS 3 is a family of Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine grant schemes. The published terms set grant aid at 40% (Animal Welfare and Nutrient Storage Scheme) or 60% (Young Farmers' Capital Investment Scheme), up to an investment ceiling of €90,000 per holding.
- Insulation is only named for certain buildings. Wall and roof insulation upgrades for farrowing, weaner and fattener pig housing and for poultry houses are named eligible items under the Young Farmers' Capital Investment Scheme. General farm-shed insulation is not a named item in the documents we checked.
- Confirm before you buy. Check eligibility with the Department and your agricultural planner, and get grant approval before any works start.
Why farm sheds suffer condensation
Condensation is building physics, not bad luck. Air carries water vapour, and warmer air can carry more of it. When that air touches a surface colder than its dew point, the vapour turns back into liquid water on the surface.
Most Irish farm sheds are built almost perfectly to make that happen:
- The roof is a single skin. A steel or fibre cement sheet has almost no insulating value, so its underside sits close to the outside temperature.
- The roof loses heat to the sky. On clear, still nights a sheet radiates heat upwards and can fall below the outside air temperature. That is why sheds often drip worst on a cold, bright morning after a dry night.
- The air inside is moist. Animals breathe out water vapour. Slurry, wet bedding, silage, fresh grain and wet machinery all add more, and the mild, damp Irish climate brings its own.
The water forms on the underside of the sheet, runs down the profile and drips from laps, fixings and purlins. It often looks like a leak, which is why so many farmers reseal fixings or replace sheets and still find the floor wet.
Why ventilation alone often is not enough
Good ventilation removes moist, stale air, and in a livestock building it is essential for animal health. Never block it to stop condensation. Ventilation cannot warm the sheet, though. On a cold, clear night a bare sheet can still fall below the dew point of well-ventilated air. The lasting fix is to keep the ventilation and treat the cold surface. Condensation, livestock welfare and the building
Drips land where they do the most harm. Water falling on lying areas keeps bedding wet, which means more straw, more labour and a damper environment for the animals. Drips along the feed barrier wet the feed. In young stock houses, a damp, draughty environment is exactly what farmers work hardest to avoid.
The building suffers too. Constant wetting corrodes steel sheets and fixings from the inside and rots timber purlins. A roof that looks sound from the yard can be failing from underneath.
Insulating the roof is not a substitute for good stockmanship, ventilation design or veterinary advice. What it does is remove one source of wet and cold that the rest of your management then does not have to fight.

Closed-cell spray foam vs insulated panels
There are two common ways to insulate a farm shed roof. Both work. They suit different buildings.

Spray foam is a combustible plastic insulant, like other plastic insulations. Keep it away from heat sources and hot works, and where the building is also a workplace or will be heated, the fire strategy must be considered.
TAMS 3 explained
TAMS 3 is the Targeted Agricultural Modernisation Schemes 3, run by the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (DAFM). It is not one grant but a set of schemes. The TAMS 3 page on gov.ie lists:

Two points catch people out. First, the grant is calculated on the reference cost, not on the price you pay, so a grant rate of 40% or 60% is not the same as 40% or 60% off your quote. Second, grant aid is only paid on approved, completed and eligible expenditure.
Is insulation TAMS-eligible?
This is the question we are asked most, and the honest answer is: only for some buildings, and only under a named scheme.
- Wall and roof insulation upgrades for farrowing, weaner and fattener pig housing and for poultry houses are named eligible items under the Young Farmers' Capital Investment Scheme. They appear in the scheme's list of eligible investments as "Energy Efficiency Upgrade" items (T&Cs, 9 January 2025, Annex B).
- Existing poultry houses: where the roof insulation of an existing poultry house is being upgraded, the same terms require a chartered engineer's report certifying that the rafters and purlins are structurally sound and capable of supporting the additional load for a period of 8 years.
- General farm-shed insulation is not a named item in the documents we checked. We did not find a general "farm building insulation" item for cattle sheds, calf houses, grain stores or machinery sheds, and we found no insulation items in the Animal Welfare and Nutrient Storage Scheme terms.
- We have not reviewed every scheme. The Pig and Poultry Investment Scheme has its own terms, which we have not checked here.
Before you buy anything: confirm eligibility with DAFM and your agricultural planner for your scheme and your tranche. Grant approval comes before works. Do not order materials or start work on the strength of a website, including this one.
If your building is not grant-eligible, the case for insulating rests on the building itself: drier stock, less bedding, protected crops and machinery, and a roof that lasts longer. A free survey gives you a fixed price to weigh against that.
Asbestos cement farm roofs
Many older Irish farm buildings still have asbestos cement roofs. They need a different approach, because any work that could disturb the sheets has its own legal process in the Republic.
There are two routes that avoid cutting or drilling the sheets:
- From inside: closed-cell spray foam bonded to the underside of the sheets. Nothing is fixed through the asbestos cement, and the foam stops the drips as it insulates.
