Contiguous Piling Insulation: Why Spray Foam Beats Rigid Board

Contiguous piled walls are one of the most common retaining structures in commercial basement construction. Insulating them properly is critical — below-ground walls face constant moisture pressure from the surrounding earth, and any failure in the insulation or vapour barrier leads to condensation, damp and structural problems.

The Problem With Rigid Board on Piled Walls

Contiguous piles are formed by drilling closely-spaced concrete piles with infill panels between them. The surface is irregular — curved pile faces, flat infill panels, stepped junctions and service penetrations. PIR rigid board insulation cannot follow these irregular surfaces. Boards must be cut, shimmed and forced into place, leaving gaps at every junction. Each gap is a cold bridge and a condensation path.

How Spray Foam Solves This

Closed-cell spray foam (Nexseal LE) is applied as a liquid that expands and bonds to the piled wall surface on contact. It conforms to every curved pile face, fills every gap between piles and infill panels, and seals around service penetrations — creating a continuous insulation and vapour barrier with zero cold bridges.

The integral vapour barrier is critical below ground. Unlike rigid board systems that require a separate tanking membrane (which can be punctured by fixings), spray foam provides both insulation and vapour barrier in a single seamless application.
