Nexseal LE is a closed-cell spray polyurethane foam — performance declared to BS EN 14315-1 — that bonds directly to steel with exceptional adhesion. Applied between ribs, around portholes and across hull plates, it creates a seamless thermal and moisture barrier that traditional materials simply cannot match.

With a lambda value of 0.027 W/m·K, even relatively thin applications deliver outstanding insulation performance — keeping your boat warm in winter and cool in summer while permanently eliminating condensation.

The problem with rockwool, PIR boards & rigid insulation on boats: traditional narrowboat insulation is cut to shape and forced between ribs. But a hull is full of complex geometry — curved hull plates, angled gussets, welded stiffeners, porthole frames, skin fittings and irregular rib spacing. Pre-manufactured boards cannot follow these shapes, leaving air gaps and voids where warm moist air meets cold steel.

These hidden voids are where condensation forms — and where internal hull corrosion begins. Over years, this unseen pitting weakens the steel. Why do narrowboats get so much condensation?
Narrowboats have single-skin steel hulls that conduct heat rapidly. In cold weather, warm moist air inside the boat meets the freezing steel and condenses — causing dripping from the roof, running water on walls, and persistent dampness. Cooking, breathing, showering and drying clothes all add moisture. Without proper insulation, a narrowboat can produce litres of condensation per day, causing corrosion, mould and rot in timber linings.
How does spray foam stop condensation in a narrowboat?
Closed-cell spray foam bonds directly to the steel hull, raising the internal surface temperature above the dew point. Because Nexseal LE is both an insulator and a vapour barrier in one, there is no cold steel surface for moisture to condense on. The foam fills every gap around ribs, gussets, portholes and weld lines — eliminating the condensation paths that traditional insulation materials miss.
What thickness of spray foam does a narrowboat need?
Most narrowboats and canal boats are sprayed with 25–50mm of Nexseal LE between the steel ribs, depending on the rib depth and whether timber battens are added. For liveaboards wanting maximum thermal comfort, thicker applications of 50–75mm with additional batten framework can be specified. The closed-cell structure means even relatively thin coats deliver excellent thermal performance — 50mm of Nexseal LE gives comparable thermal resistance to well over 100mm of traditional materials.
Can spray foam be applied to a boat that already has insulation?
Yes, but it depends on the existing insulation condition. If the old insulation (typically rockwool, PIR boards or polystyrene) has become damp, mouldy or has allowed corrosion behind it, we recommend stripping it out first so the steel hull can be inspected and treated before spraying. If the boat is a bare shell or new build, spray foam goes straight onto the clean steel.
Does spray foam prevent hull corrosion?
Spray foam significantly reduces internal hull corrosion by eliminating the condensation that causes it. Condensation trapped behind traditional insulation is the primary cause of internal steel pitting on narrowboats — it rusts the hull from the inside where you cannot see it. Closed-cell foam bonds to the steel, creates a sealed moisture barrier, and prevents any water from reaching the hull plate.
Is spray foam better than rockwool or PIR boards for boats?
For condensation control and thermal performance per millimetre, closed-cell spray foam significantly outperforms traditional narrowboat insulation materials like rockwool, sheep’s wool, PIR boards or polystyrene. Traditional materials leave gaps around ribs and fittings, absorb moisture, sag over time and allow condensation to form on the steel behind them. Spray foam bonds directly to the hull with zero gaps, does not absorb water, and acts as its own vapour barrier.
How long does it take to spray foam a narrowboat?
A standard 57ft narrowboat can typically be sprayed in 1–2 days depending on access and preparation requirements. The foam cures in minutes, so there is no drying time. Widebeams and larger vessels may take 2–3 days. If old insulation needs stripping first, allow an additional day for preparation.
Can you spray a boat at its mooring?
We can spray boats at their mooring, in a marina, or in a boatyard. The key requirement is that the boat interior is empty and accessible — the spray rig connects to the boat via hose, so as long as we can park within hose reach, we can spray at your location. Boats do not need to be out of the water for internal hull insulation.
How much does it cost to spray foam a narrowboat?
Cost depends on boat length, hull type, and the required thickness. Every boat gets a fixed price after survey, covering full hull, walls and roof to the agreed specification. Does spray foam add much weight to a narrowboat?
Closed-cell spray foam is extremely lightweight — a full narrowboat insulation typically adds only 50–100kg to the boat, which is negligible compared to the vessel’s overall displacement. This is comparable to or lighter than traditional insulation materials and far lighter than the water they prevent from condensing inside the hull.
Can spray foam be applied to aluminium boat hulls?
Yes. Nexseal LE bonds to aluminium as well as steel with the same thermal performance and condensation control.
