Why Process and Chemical Tanks Need Insulation
Chemical storage tanks in commercial and industrial facilities across Ireland serve a wide range of functions: caustic cleaning solutions in food factories, process acids in metal finishing, calcium hypochlorite in water treatment, ammonium nitrate solutions in agricultural supply, urea for SCR emissions control, and countless specialist chemistries across manufacturing. What they all share is a requirement for stable temperature control. Many industrial chemicals have defined storage temperature ranges outside of which they become unstable, crystallise, separate, or begin to react. Others must be kept above their freezing point to remain pumpable. External insulation of the storage tank is the standard method of maintaining these temperature windows in Irish ambient conditions.

Chemical Safety Duties and Engineering Controls
In Ireland, chemical safety and explosive-atmosphere (ATEX) workplace requirements are enforced by the Health and Safety Authority (HSA). Employers must prevent or adequately control exposure to hazardous chemicals, and for stored chemicals that includes preventing accidental release from the storage vessel. Temperature control contributes directly: a tank allowed to rise above the chemical's stable temperature range can vent, leak, over-pressurise or crystallise — all events the employer is expected to prevent.
Chemical risk management follows the hierarchy of control: eliminate the risk, substitute less hazardous chemicals, apply engineering controls, then administrative controls and PPE. External tank insulation is a clear engineering control that removes the temperature-driven risk without relying on operator action — the kind of measure an inspector would expect to see considered on any site handling temperature-sensitive chemicals.
Explosive Atmospheres and Temperature-Sensitive Chemicals
Chemicals that can form flammable or explosive atmospheres — including many stored solvents, fuels and reactive chemicals — fall under explosive-atmosphere (ATEX) workplace requirements. The risk of an explosive atmosphere forming must be eliminated or controlled, and temperature is a key contributor, because vapour pressure rises sharply with stored chemical temperature.
Insulating a solvent storage tank to hold it below a defined temperature ceiling is a direct control measure. It reduces vapour pressure, reduces the hazardous zone around vent points and reduces the probability of a flammable atmosphere forming at all. Where explosive-atmosphere requirements apply, the insulation specification must be supported by the site's explosive atmosphere risk assessment and the coating system must be compatible with any ATEX zone classifications.
Storage Guidance and Safety Data Sheets
The starting point for any chemical storage installation is the safety data sheet (SDS) for the stored product, which sets out the storage conditions including temperature limits, alongside the site's chemical risk assessment and any sector guidance on the design of chemical storage facilities. Thermal management is a recognised part of a well-designed chemical store, particularly for chemicals with defined storage temperature windows or reactive profiles.

Chemical Compatibility of Nexseal LE and Gaco
Because the Nexseal LE + Gaco system sits on the outside of the tank, chemical compatibility with the stored product is never the primary concern — the tank itself is the chemical-contact material. What does matter is compatibility with potential external splash, vapour venting and environmental contamination. Nexseal LE closed-cell polyurethane is resistant to dilute acids, alkalis, hydrocarbons and most common industrial chemicals once cured. The Gaco topcoat provides the first line of chemical resistance and is selected accordingly:

For severe chemical exposure environments — concentrated acids, aggressive solvents, or direct immersion scenarios — Duratite can specify a chemical-resistant overcoat over the standard Gaco topcoat. Bunding, Containment and Spill Management
Chemical storage tanks are almost always bunded — either in an integral twin-wall tank or within a masonry/concrete containment enclosure, commonly sized to at least 110% of the primary tank capacity. Environmental pollution-prevention good practice drives this. Duratite applies insulation to the primary tank shell without affecting the bund's containment function. Where the bund itself is a secondary tank, insulation can be applied to the outer shell to reduce thermal losses from the whole system.
It is critical that the foam never extends across overflow channels, drain points, sump pumps or leak detection sensors that form part of the spill management system. Duratite's surveyor identifies these at the pre-installation visit and ensures they are clearly masked off.
Temperature Control of Reactive Chemicals
Certain industrial chemicals become unstable or begin to decompose above defined temperatures. Hydrogen peroxide decomposes above 40°C. Ammonium nitrate solutions destabilise above approximately 55°C. Calcium hypochlorite releases chlorine at elevated temperature. For all of these, the storage specification includes a hard temperature ceiling, and insulation is the primary method of preventing summer solar gain from pushing the tank above that ceiling.
Conversely, some chemicals must be kept above a minimum temperature to remain pumpable — urea solution (AdBlue) crystallises below -11°C, and many process oils become viscous or solidify in cold winter conditions. External insulation retains the stored chemical's thermal inertia overnight and through cold spells, eliminating the need for trace heating on most installations.
