The Commercial Farm Tank Landscape
Commercial agriculture in Ireland runs on tanks. Every dairy farm has a bulk milk tank, usually several thousand litres, holding chilled milk between collections. Every livestock building has header tanks, drinking bowls and pressure systems feeding troughs. Every slurry operation has large above-ground slurry tanks or below-ground stores. Arable and mixed farms have feed silos, many of which store liquid feed, molasses or acid preservatives. These tanks all face the same core problem that commercial and industrial tanks face — temperature control in Irish ambient conditions — but with a much tighter cost envelope and a more demanding service environment.

Bulk Milk Tank Insulation
Bulk milk tanks must hold milk chilled at a low, stable temperature — typically 3–4°C — between collections, in line with EU food hygiene rules and milk purchaser requirements. Most modern farm tanks are factory-insulated, but that insulation is often panel-and-jacket construction that can fail, debond or become damaged over the 15–20 year working life of the tank. When the factory insulation fails, the refrigeration system runs harder, electricity costs rise and, in the worst case, milk temperature rises above the required level and the collection is rejected.
External over-insulation with Nexseal LE is an effective retrofit solution. It bonds directly to the existing tank cladding, forms a continuous thermal envelope and can restore the tank's effective U-value without removing or replacing the failed original insulation. Farmers typically see 15–30% reductions in refrigeration electricity consumption following over-insulation of an aged bulk milk tank.
Livestock Water Tanks and Troughs
Reliable access to drinking water is a basic welfare requirement for livestock under animal welfare law. Frozen water tanks and troughs are a common cause of welfare problems on farms during winter cold snaps. Nexseal LE external insulation on livestock header tanks and exposed pipework prevents freezing in normal winter conditions and reduces the frequency of manual intervention (ice breaking, thawing) that winter livestock care currently requires.
The specification for livestock water tanks is typically 50–75mm of Nexseal LE with Gaco U92 polyurethane topcoat for abrasion resistance against curious livestock, fork-lift passes and day-to-day farm operations.
Slurry and Effluent Tanks
Above-ground slurry tanks — typically large-diameter cylindrical concrete or steel structures — benefit from insulation in two different ways. In anaerobic digester systems, the slurry must be held at 35–38°C for mesophilic digestion, and insulating the tank dramatically reduces heat loss and improves gas yield. In conventional slurry storage, insulation reduces summer solar gain and the associated ammonia volatilisation, which matters for both air quality and farm nutrient management.
Nexseal LE bonds well to both concrete and steel slurry tank shells and can be applied in thicknesses up to 120mm for high-performance AD applications.

Feed Silos with Liquid Contents
Liquid feed silos (molasses, urea solutions, acid preservatives) have defined temperature windows outside of which the contents crystallise, separate or become difficult to pump. Molasses, for example, becomes extremely viscous below 10°C and pumping problems escalate rapidly in winter. External Nexseal LE insulation retains the thermal inertia of the liquid feed overnight and through cold weather, eliminating the freeze/thaw problems that farm feeding systems experience without insulation.
Quality Assurance Audits and Dairy Hygiene
Farm quality assurance audits and milk purchaser inspections typically include an assessment of the bulk milk tank, its condition and its temperature control performance. A properly maintained, well-insulated tank consistently holding milk at the required temperature is one of the easier audit items to pass. A deteriorated tank with failing insulation generates non-conformances and in severe cases can put the farm's scheme membership at risk. External over-insulation with Nexseal LE is a practical way to restore performance without replacing the tank.
For dairy hygiene purposes, the work is carried out entirely externally to the tank, with no contact with the milk-side surfaces. The milk-contact stainless steel interior of the tank is never affected by the insulation work.
Food Contact Considerations
An important technical point: Nexseal LE cured foam is non-toxic and physiologically inert, but it is not a food-contact material. Duratite's position — and the position of the product manufacturers — is that Nexseal LE should only be applied to the external surfaces of tanks, with food-contact surfaces always being the tank's own internal material (typically stainless steel on bulk milk tanks). We do not specify Nexseal LE as a lining or internal coating for food-contact applications, and we advise customers that any food-contact surface requires a separate food-safe material selected by the tank manufacturer.
This distinction matters: the Nexseal LE + Gaco system is a thermal envelope around the outside of a tank, and food compliance on the inside of the tank is unaffected by our work.
