In poultry houses, temperature control is even more critical — broilers require a consistent 18–22°C environment, and every degree below optimum reduces feed conversion ratio and growth rate.
Insulating livestock buildings with spray foam delivers two immediate benefits:
1. Reduced heating costs. In heated livestock buildings (poultry houses, farrowing units, calf houses), spray foam typically reduces heating energy by 35–50%. For a large poultry house, where heating is one of the biggest running costs, that is a significant annual saving.

Grain Stores: Moisture and Temperature Control

Milking Parlours: Hygiene and Condensation
Milking parlours present a particularly challenging insulation environment. The combination of heat from livestock, moisture from wash-down procedures, and the requirement for hygienic surfaces that can be cleaned creates conditions where condensation is almost guaranteed on uninsulated metal surfaces.
Condensation dripping into the milking area is a direct hygiene risk and a non-compliance issue under dairy quality assurance schemes. Spray foam insulation eliminates this condensation, and the closed-cell surface of Nexseal LE is non-absorbent and can be washed down — unlike mineral wool or fibreglass, which harbour bacteria and deteriorate when exposed to moisture.
The recommended specification for milking parlours is 40–50mm of Nexseal LE on all metal surfaces (roof and walls), with DC315 intumescent coating where required by the fire risk assessment. The surface can be left exposed or covered with a hygienic cladding panel depending on the parlour design and the quality assurance scheme requirements.

Potato and Root Crop Stores
Potato stores require precise temperature control — typically 3–4°C for long-term storage — to prevent sprouting, sweetening, and disease development. The store must maintain this temperature using a combination of ambient cooling (drawing in cold outside air when available) and, in warmer periods, refrigeration. Insulation reduces the refrigeration energy required and stabilises temperatures during warm spells.
Spray foam is particularly effective in potato stores because the seamless application eliminates air leakage that would introduce warm, moist air into the controlled environment. The vapour barrier prevents condensation on metal surfaces that would drip onto the stored crop — a direct cause of disease and spoilage.
The recommended specification for potato stores is 50–80mm of Nexseal LE, depending on the temperature differential between inside and outside and the level of refrigeration available. Stores relying primarily on ambient cooling benefit from thicker insulation that maintains cool temperatures for longer as spring and summer temperatures rise.
Building Regulations Exemptions for Agriculture
Agricultural buildings can benefit from exemptions under the Building Regulations, but the detail differs between the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland:
Energy performance: Some buildings used solely for keeping livestock, growing plants, or storing agricultural products may fall outside the energy performance requirements. Where that is the case, there is no regulatory minimum U-value — the farmer can specify insulation thickness based on practical requirements and budget. Confirm the position with your Building Control Authority before relying on an exemption.
Fire safety considerations: Agricultural buildings may still be subject to fire safety requirements (TGD B in the Republic of Ireland, Technical Booklet E in Northern Ireland), and the requirements for exposed insulation surfaces depend on how the building is used and its proximity to the site boundary and other buildings.
